Halloween in Tribeca

I used to think city kids got jipped out of a great Halloween because they had to go trick-or-treating in an apartment building.  What fun is that?  Going door-to-door through identical, sterile hallways just doesn't have the same cache as pounding the pavement to collect as much candy as possible.  I was determined to give Lyla a better Halloween experience than the apartment building model.  I heard that the Tribeca businesses give out candy on Halloween, so I thought we would give that a try.  Wow.  I now know, Tribeca kids have it pretty darn great on Halloween.  Not only do they get the outdoor experience, they get gourmet treats.  You see, all of the high-end bakeries and restaurants participate in trick-or-treating.  And do you think Nobu or David Bouley would just give out some kit kats and clark bars?  Nope.  Among the candy, we were spoiled with freshly-dipped caramel apples (still warm...), cider donuts, homemade marshmallows, dark-chocolate brownies and more.  We stopped at Duane Park Patisserie and the little boy in front of us said "brownies, again? Oh, man."  There was also a professional photographer who set up an outdoor studio to take kids' photos. And the wine stores were all handing out wine to frazzled mommies.  It was a memorable Halloween for sure.

For Lyla's part, I magically persuaded her to wear a costume.  It was the third one I purchased this year.  We went from princess to fairy to Unicorn.  Luckily, I was able to find a unicorn costume on clearance at Pottery Barn Kids, but the savings were negated by the need for $30 overnight shipping.

I couldn't take a lot of pictures because I was trying to eat apples and donuts and drink wine while making sure my toddler didn't run into oncoming traffic.  But I had to take one of this little girl as Lady Gaga!

And just because I can't get enough of this Jimmy Kimmel video:

Halloween 2010

We celebrated Halloween at my Aunt Phyllis' house in Lido Beach. She was so great to host us and such a good sport. She came right from the train from D.C., after attending John Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity, back to her house full of sugar-spiked kids. It was Lyla's first time trick or treating from house to house and I think she caught on pretty quick.

First house was a success!

She loved Chrissy's dinosaur costume.

Star Wars buddies (how handsome?)

My cute pup

Lyla thought my fur vest was my matching dog costume.

Lyla and Chris were a little slower than the rest of her cousins -- typically two houses behind the rest of the bunch. But in the end, that proved to be an advantage. They didn't have to waste time walking up to houses where we knew no one was home and they got a heads up on houses that didn't hand out candy.

Dennis came back from one house as we were approaching and with a very dejected look said to me "It's pretzels." We skipped that one! Thanks, Den!

Lyla's biggest rookie mistake was picking the "bad candy". At one house, she could have chosen, Reeses peanut butter cups, Snickers or Twix and she chose the Whoppers. Another time she picked a Mounds over a Crunch bar. Bad choices, Miss Lyla. The debate of the day was whether Butterfinger is a good choice or bad choice. I say bad.

A perk for the parents. White sangria roadies in vampire cups!

With a pitcher following not too far behind in case anyone was running low.

Lyla got a kick out of all the big kids walking around in costume. She really liked this Elvis!

Back at the house...Grandma and her babies

Dylan stood guard at the door....One for Dylan, One for trick or treaters...One for Dylan, one for trick or treaters. At one point Eileen found about a dozen candy wrappers in Dylan's lap.

We invaded all the toys at Aunt Phyllis' house.

Happy Halloween!
