Bye, Bye Beach

This has been a truly unforgettable summer and I am sad to see it come to an end. After this weekend, we are back in the city full time. The ocean will no longer be the first thing we see in the morning and the last thing we see before we go to bed. A few things I will miss: 1) Being so close to my family. The time they spent with Lyla was invaluable. I'm particularly thankful that Lyla got to spend so much time with her cousins. I hope they are best friends for their whole lives. 2) The nights Mark and I spent listening to the ocean from our terrace. Especially the nights we watched lightning storms on the horizon. 3) Taking Lyla for walks on the beach. I hope I put enough "Long Beach sand in her shoes" to make her always want to come back. 4) Lathering Lyla up with sunscreen. She giggles and squeals everytime that SPF 70 hits her belly. We managed to keep our little girl as white as a snowflake all summer. 5) Getting to see my favorite little boys every day. Nicolas is the smartest, funniest and most lovable little boy in the world. And when Christopher smiles with his little dimples, your heart can just melt. 6) The sudden chaos that can erupt when you have three little ones in the house. 7) Bungalow iced coffee. It's worth the sloooooow service and grumpy waiter. A few things I will not miss: 1) Sleeping with sand in our bed no matter how hard I try to keep sand out of the bedroom. 2) Cleaning the sand off of Lyla after a day at the beach. No matter how hard I tried, a few grains of sand could always be found in her ears of between her toes. 3) The artwork on the walls of our rental apartment. Those of you who visited know exactly what I am talking about. Our landlord was a nice guy but is not winning any interior decorating contests any time soon. 4) Lugging Lyla's car seat in and out of the car, resulting in wrist tendinitis for a good portion of July. City living is much easier in this respect -- we just walk everywhere and get stuff delivered. 5) The "condo commandos" who took pleasure in preventing people from having fun. 6) Hearing Mark complain about how the Long Beach lifeguards hardly let you swim. 7) Living in two, sometimes three places. Sometimes it just feels good to be home and settled. Mark and I were reflecting on what a great summer it had been but agreed that we are both ready for the fall. In a Men Are From Mars. Women Are From Venus moment, he asked me -- "Do you know what I'm really looking forward to?" My response: "Fall clothes?" He looked at me like I had ten heads and responded, "Football." To each his own. Personally, I can't wait for cashmere.
