Nana's Birthday

Nana turned 89 this year and we had a really lovely semi-surprise celebration in her honor. My mom planned a get together with family and close friends. The usual crew was there along with our cousins who live in Florida but were in town for the weekend.

Everyone loves Nana

The kids were so darn cute together. The big kids sat at their own table and kept themselves busy all night.

Twin cousins Dylan and Jessie

Lyla wore leopard in Nana's honor :)

She kept running over to Nana all night and only wanted to sit on Nana's lap.

Except for when she was begging us to see the big shark hanging in the main dining room of the restaurant.

My mom and Eileen each gave a sweet toast to Nana. Nana is known to write poems for special occasions, so my mom and Aunt Phyllis wrote one for her this year. After the toasts, everyone had an opportunity to share a touching or funny story about Nana. Some were more appropriate than others :)

One of the highlights of the night was when the big kids put on a little show. Jessie played the violin and was amazing! Emily was awesome on the flute and she just started playing. And Dylan, Dennis and Nicolas had a pretty impressive rendition of Happy Birthday on the bongo drums.

And, of course, a party could not be complete without a spontaneous dance party with some breakdancing.

I don't know what is going on with Lyla in this video. What is that bend over thing she's doing? I think Chrissy wins for best rythym.

For the cake, my mom recreated an old recipe for rum cake that my Aunt Nina used to make. Except she wasn't sure that everyone would want rum, so she bought mini bottles of rum for each person to add their own (classy, huh?). Let's just say that Nana was eating cake crumbs in rum soup...

Testing the cake out.

Who's birthday is it?

Waiting patiently for her piece.
